Natural Garden Tips for September 2006

This Month's Garden Tip from Our Resident Gardener, Joshua Wood

Don't miss out on the perfect time for establishing an immaculate lawn.

For most of the country, September is the best time to establish a new lawn or reseed an existing lawn. Why September? Throughout much of the summer, your lawn has had to deal with high heat, low moisture, and weeds that thrive in summer conditions, like crab grass. What's more, this year much of the country has been hit with a double shot of grubs and Japanese beetles. Early September typically brings much needed rainfall and lower temperatures that lessen the stress on grasses. By seeding now, you're providing plenty of time for your grass to germinate and prepare for winter. That will give your lawn a great head start for next Spring's growing season, strengthening it for the stresses of Summer.

How to apply seed correctly

Whether you're over-seeding or establishing a new lawn, the key is to get good seed/soil contact. Start by mowing your lawn. And, this is one of the few times you'll want to bag the clippings instead of mulching them in place. Generally, grass does best at about 3 1/4", but some warm season grasses may require closer clipping. The key is to never cut off more than 1/3 of the blades. Next, lightly rake the lawn to get up excess thatch and loosen the soil. Spread your grass seed. Now, here's the real trick for getting a gorgeous lawn in the spring ?Speedy GrowTM. Liberally spray on this organic growth accelerator moistening the soil and seed, but being careful not to have the water pool or run-off.

Why I like to use Speedy Grow over ordinary fertilizers is that, giving your seeds a thorough soaking is essential to starting the germination process, and by spraying Speedy Grow it eliminates the hassle of going back over your lawn with a broadcast spreader and then watering.

Water the key to success

Frequent light watering is the key to good grass germination. You want to water at least 3 times a day, wetting the seeds and the soil, but not soaking the area. It is much better to deliver 1/8" of water 4 times a day than 1/2" all at once. As the grass germinates, and grows to 3" you can taper-off the watering to 3 times a week. I also like to apply another application of Speedy Grow once a week. While not necessary, the results are amazing, and make my lawn the talk of the town.

The other benefit is that Speedy Grow doesn't work like a fertilizer, instead, the kelp it contains tells the plants that they need to produce more root growth. The plants respond, significantly increasing root mass, which reduces water needs and increases drought tolerance. After the roots are well established, the plants then push out spectacular top growth.

Now you can protect your pets from fleas, ticks and other biting insects without DEET, Pyrethrins or other harmful chemicals. Ever since we released Liquid Net, customers have been begging for a solution that they could use on their pets, too. Our botanists and biologists have responded by creating a formulation designed specifically for pets. Liquid Net for Pets sprays on easily, smells great, and keeps your pet's coat nice and soft. It's not greasy or messy and is 100% natural.

Mum's the word on Deer Damage

As much as we all hate to admit it, sometimes things are forgotten. That's exactly what recently happened to Deb, one of our Liquid Fence employees. She bought a dozen fall mums in pots to set along her sidewalk. The next morning she woke up to see 12 empty pots. She had forgotten to spray each of her plants with our Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent. The rest of her plants that she routinely sprays were untouched, but those mums were devastated. After going back to the store and buying another dozen flowers, Deb sprayed each one with Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent, and reports that all of her plants are doing well, and the deer have not come back to snack again.

End the Mess of Unwanted Geese, Ducks & Turkeys

It can be like a 50's era thriller. You're enjoying a peaceful day in your backyard, or at the lake, when the skies darken overhead and hundreds of birds come in for a landing. These pests can become very aggressive, chasing pets and biting small children. They can also be carriers of disease and are highly destructive. And then there's the disgusting mess they leave behind. You can end these problems by using Liquid Fence Goose Repellent. Our 100% guaranteed effective repellent makes their food sources unsavory, but is perfectly safe to use around your plants and family.

Planning a Camping Trip?

Campers, take along a bottle of Liquid Fence Snake Repellent to create a barrier around your campsite. Just spray a border around your camping area, and sleep soundly knowing that snakes will stay away. The best part is that our snake repellent is 100% Napthalene Free. Napthalene can cause anemia, memory loss, and is a class 3 carcinogen (can cause cancer). Our Liquid Fence Snake Repellent is safe for use around your family and pets.
